British - Sudanese relations to reexchange ambassador
Sudan-UK, Politics, 6/25/1999
British Minister of State for Middle East Affairs Geoffrey Hoon on Wednesday held a round of talks with the first secretary of the Sudanese Foreign Ministry, Hassan Abidin, in London, aimed at restoring relations between the two countries to the level of ambassadors after a cessation following the US strikes against the Sudanese al-Shefaa medicinal factory.
Well-informed sources in London following the meeting said that Abidin will come back to his country to hold further consultations in light of the meeting with the British official and that London hopes that Abidin will come back to resume the talks.
No statement was issued following this round of talks. In a speech he read on Wednesday night before the council in charge of strengthening Arab-British understanding, Hoon expressed his optimism toward a quick return for British diplomats to Khartoum.
Sudan reduced its diplomatic representation in London by withdrawing its ambassador following the support expressed by British Prime Minister Tony Blair for the US air strikes against the Sudanese factory on August 21, 1998.
On August 27, 1998, Britain withdrew its diplomats form Khartoum.
