FAO warns of poverty caused by drought in African horn
Regional, Economics, 6/24/1999
The U.N. food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) warned on Wednesday of the rising poverty rate in the African Horn due to drought.
A statement released by FAO said rainfall in Somalia, Ethiopia and Kenya registered sharp drop in May and June.
It said poverty percentage would increase because 80 % of agriculture depends on rain in that region.
Rivers water table also dropped to minimum levels, the statement said noting that rain season would start after six months.
FAO approved a 40.5 million dollars aid for 1.2 million people.
Other factors that contribute to poverty are civil war and the subsequent difficulty of extending aid.
