Al-Sharaa meets Canadian prime minister

Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien on Wednesday in Ottawa received Syrian Foreign Minister Farouk al-Sharaa who conveyed to Chretien a message from Syrian President Hafez al-Assad pertaining to bilateral relations between Syria and Canada and current developments concerning the peace process.

Canada's prime minister expressed his appreciation for the role played by Syria in achieving peace and stability in the region. He asked al-Sharaa to convey his best wishes to al-Assad and to convey a reply message to him. Chretien expressed his readiness together with his government, to provide any possible support for providing success to the Middle East peace process.

Al-Sharaa extended an invitation to the Canadian prime minister to visit Syria and Chretien promised to pay the visit within the shortest time possible.

On Tuesday afternoon, al-Sharaa attended a meeting organized by the Arab-Canadian Business Institute in the city of Toronto. Also present were the chairman and members of the council and representatives of the Canadian ministries of the industry and the economy. The foreign minister gave an intervention on the latest political developments in the region and the Arab position concerning the Middle East peace.

Al-Sharaa also highlighted the facilities provided by Syria for Arab and foreign investors alike in the areas of agriculture, industry, and tourism in light of the current laws which contribute to increasing incentives and encouraging investment operations in Syria.
