Arab parliamentary Union for holding Arab Summit
Regional, Politics, 6/23/1999

The Arab parliamentary Union (APU) has expressed backing to the ongoing efforts to convene an Arab summit, the union secretary-general said.

Noureddine Bouchkouj (Morocco) told the Egyptian Radio "Sawt al Arab" that the APU backs the ongoing efforts to hold an Arab summit and that it will examine during its upcoming session in Damascus next Sunday means of cementing Arab ranks and restoring Arab solidarity.

The Damascus session, he added, will assess arab joint action and set a program for APU activities.

King Hassan II of Morocco and president Husni Mubarak of Egypt have called for the holding of an Arab summit and discussed the idea "in detail" earlier this month in Rabat.

Mubarak was visiting Morocco to co-chair with the king the third session of the Moroccan-Egyptian High joint commission.

President Mubarak had then said that the present situation in the Arab world requires the holding of an Arab summit and that the two heads of state have converging standpoints on the matter that they discussed in detail.

The Arab League has welcomed the call to convene the summit and has already started contacts with several Arab foreign ministers and Arab delegates to the League on the proposal. The latest Arab summit was held in Cairo in June 1996 with the participation of all Arab states, except Iraq.
