Moroccan and Spanish legislative chambers express will to upgrade dialogue
Morocco-Spain, Politics, 6/22/1999

The Moroccan chamber of advisors (upper chamber of the parliament) and the two Spanish houses expressed on Monday will to upgrade dialogue between the two countries' legislative bodies to the level of the existing bilateral political and economic relations.

Contacts held by speaker of the Moroccan chamber, Mohamed Jalal Essaid, who is on a work visit in Spain, tackled issues of common interest and means to develop bilateral cooperation and coordinate stances in the Mediterranean region.

The Moroccan mp invited the Spanish parliamentary friendship group to visit Morocco in order to ponder with Moroccan law-makers on the exchange of experience on the bi-cameral system.

Essaid also renewed Morocco's adherence to the enforcement of the Sahara settlement plan and to the participation of all people of Sahrawi-descent in the referendum, in accordance with the Houston agreements. He further reaffirmed Morocco's stance regarding Sebta and Melilia, two Moroccan northern towns still under Spanish rule. He recalled in this regard the proposal made by King Hassan II to set up a reflection group to ponder on the future of the two cities.

During another meeting, first deputy premier, Fransisco Alvarez-Cascos, told the Moroccan parliamentary delegation that Morocco is a priority in the Mediterranean for Spanish foreign policy.
