Moroccan remote sensing experts meet NASA peers in Rabat
Morocco, Science, 6/22/1999
Experts from the Moroccan Royal Center for Remote Sensing (CRTS) held here Tuesday a meeting with peers from the US National Aeronautics Space Administration (NASA) on cooperation in desertification control and environment protection.
Opening the meeting, US ambassador to Morocco, Edward Gabriel, stressed the keen interest granted by NASA to developing cooperation with Morocco.
Morocco and the USA, which have centuries-old relations, are working together to identify fields requiring more intensified cooperation, Gabriel said, before underlining that the two countries share the same views on several issues, especially the Middle-East peace process.
He added that cooperation between NASA and CRTS is more than promising, especially in struggle against desert encroachment, oceanography and climatic changes.
The US diplomat voiced hope that the two parties would reach a cooperation accord in these fields.
For his part, CRTS director, Dr. Driss El-Hadani, highlighted the cooperation possibilities existing between Morocco and the USA in scientific, economic and cultural fields.
He added that the meeting is a suitable opportunity for NASA and CRTS to exchange information and expertise in desert encroachment, water resources protection, oceanography and environment.
The CRTS acquired a considerable experience in the use of remote sensing for the management of resources and the protection of the environment, he said, adding that his center plays a crucial role in data collection to adapt them to national and regional needs.
The three-day work visit of the NASA team aims to consolidate cooperation ties and exchange between NASA and the Moroccan Royal Remote Sensing Center (CRTS) in space techniques matters.
The six-member delegation will examine with Moroccan experts several issues of common concern, regarding water resources, desertification, weather fluctuations and oceanography.
The two sides will also examine training opportunities and experts exchange.
