A call for involving the younger generation in Saudi leadership
Saudi Arabia, Politics, 6/22/1999

The British daily the Guardian dealt on Monday with the future of the leadership in Saudi Arabia under the escalated demands for economic reform.

The British daily said that according to what has been reported by the BBC, quoting experts and certain members of the royal family in Saudi Arabia, that Saudi Arabia should thoroughly and precisely ask itself whether it has become ripe time for the elderly in the family to prepare the way for a more open ruling system in which younger generations can take part.

The paper quoted one of King Fahd Bin Abdul Aziz's brothers, Prince Talal, as saying that the kingdom is in need of ensuring a mechanism to get the young generation of princes involved in the government.

The paper noted that Talal was alienated from power in 1961 because he led a group which he called al-Ahrar, which called for democratic changes in Saudi Arabia.
