Morocco, Italy sign implementation protocol for readmission of illegal emigrants
Morocco-Italy, Politics, 6/21/1999

Morocco and Italy signed in Rome at the end of last week the implementation protocol of an agreement signed in July 1998 related to the readmission of illegal emigrants from both countries and to the situation and living and work conditions of expatriates.

The document was signed by Moroccan minister of the interior, Driss Basri, and Italian peer, Rosa Russo Jervolino.

According to a statement, the agreement reflects the two countries' will to join efforts to efficiently control illegal migration while respecting human rights and basic freedoms.

According to the Moroccan minister, the agreement defines and consolidates the legal situation of citizens from the two countries who are legally settled in the other country.

He added that the Moroccan community in Italy, estimated at 140,000 people, should enjoy all advantages guaranteed by Italian laws, mainly the right to work, to health care and to children education.
