Jordanian students expelled from Baghdad
Jordan-Iraq, Politics, 6/21/1999
The Jordanian ambassador in Baghdad, Hammoud al-Qatarenah, announced on Sunday that the Iraqi authorities expelled some 55 Jordanian students who were studying in Iraqi universities after it was proven there were false documents in their papers submitted when they were enrolled in these universities.
Al-Qatarenah told the AFP that the Iraqi decision is "generous" because the Iraqi leadership only limited its decision to evacuating the students who violated the laws, because according to the Iraqi laws, those Jordanian students should be jailed for years.
He added that three of these students were detained for investigation for a while following the intervention by the Ministry of Higher Education in Jordan. He continued that the Iraqi authorities gave the students governed by this law a grace period of 72 hours to leave and that this period is due to expire today.
He said that the first 20 students left on Saturday in a coach and the others left individually or in small groups for Jordan.
