Moroccan women to be involved in desertification struggle
Morocco, Economics, 6/18/1999

Morocco and the U.N development program decided to involve women in the implementation of the convention on struggle against desertification.

The decision was announced on Thursday which coincided with the world day of struggle against desertification and drought.

The parties to the convention on struggle against desertification pledged to foster the awareness of local population and especially women, and to ease their participation in decision-making.

It is in this respect that Morocco and the UNDP decided to promote the involvement of the woman, and especially the rural woman, in implementing the convention that was ratified by Morocco in 1996. Workshops, sensitization campaigns and training sessions will be held for the benefit of Moroccan women to stress the role of local populations in struggle against desert encroachment.

Workshops will also be held to know women's concerns and standpoints and to assess their needs before drafting a national plan against desertification.
