Baghdad admits to large explosion
Iraq, Politics, 6/16/1999

Baghdad has admitted to a large explosion in one of its areas which includes centers for security and intelligence systems, as well as presidential palaces and a palace for Qusai, Saddam Hussein's son.

Baghdad has accused the "evil hirelings" of exploding a booby-trapped car in a "residential" area in al-Karradah al-Shrqeyah, in the downtown of the Iraqi capital.

However, a spokesman for the Iranian opposition Mujahidin Khalq organization told the London-based al-Hayat daily that the explosion did not target the organization in al-Karada al-Sharqeyah, adding that this attack is "a terrorist operation, similar to that carried out last week."

Several Iraqis were wounded on Monday following a car explosion in one of Baghdad's suburbs. A statement released by the Iraqi general security directorate said the explosion targeted a residential area in al-Karada al-Sharqeyah as a result of detonating a Toyota car, adding that the incident also resulted in making cracks in neighboring buildings.
