Jordan ask Britain for support to cancel part of Jordan's debts
Jordan-UK, Politics, 6/16/1999
The speaker of the Jordanian Parliament, Abdul Hadi al-Majali, reviewed with a British delegation currently visiting Jordan, led by John Austin, conditions prevailing in the region on the political and economic fields and the impact of these conditions on Jordan.
Al-Majali expressed the appreciation of the Jordanian Parliament for the developed friendship relations with Britain and Jordan's looking forward for strengthening these relations. He stressed Jordan's continued open foreign policy toward "brothers and friends, alike" and its continued efforts to strengthen foreign relations.
For his part, Austin stressed Britain's desire to consolidate relations with Jordan in various fields.
Meanwhile, Jordanian Prime Minister Abdul Raouf al-Rawabdeh expressed his hope that the United Kingdom will take a permanent position toward Jordan regarding canceling part of Jordan's accumulated debts during the summit meeting of the seven major industrial countries in Germany on Sunday.
This came during El-Rawabda's reception Monday with the British parliamentary delegation that is currently visiting Jordan.
He said the economic conditions through which Jordan passes and its resulted commitments, especially debt service that reaches $800 million annually, form an essential obstacle before Jordanian economic growth and exhaust the state's budget.
