Moroccan trade union leader calls ILO to back Morocco's social dialogue
Morocco, Economics, 6/15/1999

Moroccan trade union leader Noubir Amaoui called the International Labor Organization (ILO) to back Morocco's social dialogue experience aimed at solving workers' problems through the forging of partnership between the state, employers and trade unions.

Addressing the 87th ILO conference, currently convening in Geneva, Noubir Amaoui, head of the "Confederation Democratique du Travail," surveyed the evolution of social dialogue in Morocco and affirmed that Moroccan workers have greatly contributed to the building of a culture of dialogue and to sustaining the socioeconomic development process of the Kingdom.

He called for the respect of the social rights of Moroccan migrant workers and for adapting Morocco's labor laws to the enforced international regulations.

The CDT chief stressed further the need to endow all Moroccan workers with a social welfare system protecting them against industrial injuries and ensuring them a decent retirement.

He also voiced hope that the next round of meetings between the Moroccan government, trade unions and employers will be crowned with success and yield positive results for the working class.

During the next round of the tripartite meeting, the Moroccan socioeconomic partners will review the progress made in the implementation of accords reached last April.

The Moroccan government, major trade Unions and employers have agreed during their first encounter to promote employment, low-cost lodgings and create the appropriate atmosphere for the encouragement of investments.

They also agreed on the respect of trade unions' freedom, extension of social welfare coverage and encouragement of low-cost lodging projects.

The government had pledged to allocate around $77 million for the creation of an employment agency and vowed to devote 2% of its investment budget to the building of low-cost lodgings.

The government also set the minimum retirement pensions at 500 DH (around $51) and the reintegration of a number of civil servants dismissed for unionist activities.

The private sector decided to contribute 3% of its net profit to housing projects in return for some fiscal incentives.
