US ambassador in Cairo: US hopes to start final status negotiations on Palestinian track soon

The US ambassador in Cairo, Daniel Kurtzer, said the visit of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak to Washington will be a chance to hold talks and consultations concerning means of enhancing bilateral relations in their different aspects and to exchange views on means of bolstering cooperation concerning issues of joint interest, either regionally or internationally, to achieve the countries' stability and development.

He described relations between the two countries as excellent, rational and developing.

In a meeting held with member of the Lions Club, Kurtzer said the visit will focus on discussing several issues, at the top of which comes the resumption of the peace process in the Middle East.

He added that both Egypt and the United States are waiting for the formation of the new Israeli government, hoping that this new government can intensify its efforts to resume the negotiations, carry out the ratified agreements and implement the Wye River accord.

Kurtzer, moreover, expressed his country's hope that final status negotiations on the Palestinian track will start soon on the basis that they will not take long, for instance a year, adding that Washington also works for resuming negotiations on the Syrian and Lebanese track, as well as the several negotiations concerning discuss the refugee issue, the environment, water and disarmament so as to achieve stability and development in the region.
