200 mummies uncovered in Egypt
Egypt, Culture, 6/12/1999
A cemetery of mummies dating to the Greco-Roman era was found in Egypt's Western desert Al-Bahariya Oasis.
Gaballah Ali Gaballah, Secretary-General of the Supreme Council for Antiquities said the mummies included those of wealthy citizens and the rulers of the era.
Archaeologist Zahi Hawwas, director of the Central Cairo and Giza Antiquity Department, added, "Only four tombs have been handled. Work is expected to run for several years until the mission can find the remainder of the mummies which will not be lesser than 10,000." Work on the excavation was headed by Hawwas and started four years ago.
Hawwas added that the discoveries also included precious stones, amulets representing a number of gods, small statues of women mourners located behind the deceased, and a winery.
