UN to force Israel to pay compensation for Qana
Lebanon-Israel-UN, Politics, 6/11/1999
The UN General Assembly on Wednesday approved a decision that demanded Israel to pay compensation of US $1.2 million as a result of bombarding Qana in April, 1996.
Sections 2,3,10, and 11 of a general resolution on funding UN troops in south Lebanon demanded that Israel pay compensation since a UN report has put direct blame on Israel for the Qana incident and said that Israel was "deliberate" in its bombing of the UN headquarters in the South of Lebanon that resulted the death of many Lebanese civilians.
Councilor Houssam Diab at Lebanon's Mission to the UN said that the passage of the resolution stipulates that the UN Secretary General follow up on Israel making the payment, and reporting back to the UN.
The resolution passed by a yes vote by 74 countries, whereas 42 countries abstained, including all European states.
The resolution was opposed by Israel and the US.
