Sudan-Eritrea, Politics, 6/11/1999

Sudanese Foreign Minister Mustafa Othman Ismael said on Thursday that he will hold a meeting on Sunday in Doha with his Eritrean counterpart in order to begin the executive steps for the reconciliation agreement signed by the Sudanese and Eritrean presidents under the patronage of Qatar.

Following his meeting with the secretary general of the Arab League in Cairo on Thursday, the Sudanese foreign minister said that the Sudanese government's current policy aims at unifying Sudanese ranks. He in this respect added that a law has been enacted providing for returning to political pluralism.

He continued that the government also intends to reach with the opposition an agreement formula.

On his talks with the AL chief, the Sudanese minister said, "We have discussed Arab conditions and matters debated on the coming session of the Arab League council in September."

He said that he briefed Arab League Secretary General Esmat Abdul Meguid on developments in Sudan and Sudan's relations with foreign states. The Sudanese minister said the AL chief briefed him on the stumbled Middle East peace process in light of the recent Israeli elections.
