Morocco describes its democracy at Development and Human Rights conference
Morocco-Regional, Politics, 6/9/1999

Morocco has managed to foster the democratic process and promote human rights culture, thanks to King Hassan II's wisdom and clearsightedness, Moroccan human rights minister said in Cairo Monday.

Taking the floor during the opening ceremony of a colloquy currently being held in Cairo under the theme "Development and Human Rights," Mohamed Aujjar said Morocco has opted since independence for the multiparty system which allowed the country to usher in its vanguard political alternation experience.

The consolidation of democracy has allowed the civil society to contribute actively in decision-making and socioeconomic development process, the Moroccan minister added, recalling the sustained efforts made by the kingdom to protect the rights of women and children, combat illiteracy, create job opportunities and raise the living standards of the lower social layers.

The Moroccan minister urged the Arab states to develop common strategies for the promotion of human rights culture and stressed the need to protect the immigrants' rights and ensure a free movement of persons and capital.

The Moroccan human rights minister, who arrived Sunday in Cairo to attend the colloquy, conferred the same day with Arab league secretary General, Esmat Abdul Meguid, on Morocco's human rights experience and efforts to promote democracy and the rule of law.
