Algerian people may go through a referendum
Algeria, Politics, 6/9/1999
The Algerian dailies al-Muhaqiq and al-Youm reported on Tuesday in Algiers that Algerian President Abdul Aziz Bouteflika may hold a referendum at the beginning of autumn or following the African summit in order to have the Algerians take part in the proper decision towards the national reconciliation and the declared truce by the armed wing of the banned Islamic Salvation Front.
The two dailies noted that President Bouteflika's resorting to this choice is still viewed as a "reserve measure" that might be foiled by societies of victims of terrorism, parties known for their anti-terrorist stances and groups which show great hatred for the idea of reconciliation.
