War erupts over exports between Egypt and the European Union
Egypt-European Union, Politics, 6/8/1999

A war over exports between Egypt and the European Union has erupted, as Cairo decided to halt imports of chicken and eggs coming from EU countries, aiming at protecting the Egyptian consumer.

Egyptian customs began to implement this decision as of this morning.

Sources from the European Commission in Cairo said Egypt has taken this decision in reply to the failure of Egyptian - European negotiations aimed at canceling the EU's decision to ban imports of Egyptian potatoes, peanuts, and fish.

The European sources said the European Union would not respond to Egyptian demands, saying that discussions of this issue will take place during the meetings of the World Trade Organization in Seattle, Washington in the USA during November.
