In Asmara, Sudanese opposition leaders discuss draft agreements with government
Sudan, Politics, 6/7/1999

The meeting of the Sudanese Democratic National Alliance comprising opposition leaders, chaired by Mohamed Othman El-Merghani is to be held today in Asmara to discuss a draft agreement presented by the Sudanese government.

The meeting will be attended by the Democratic Union Party, the Ummah Party, the Sudanese People's Liberation Movement/Army and the Communist Party.

Sources in Sudanese opposition stated that the meeting in a general will agree upon holding dialogue with the government, specifically after it became clear that El-Merghani no longer adheres to his previous opinion on the necessity of toppling the current government in Sudan.

Former Sudanese prime minister and leader of Ummah Party in Cairo, El-Sadeq El-Mahdi left yesterday, heading for Asmara to participate in the meetings of the Sudanese opposition leadership to discuss means of dialogue between the government and opposition.
