UAE warns Gulf states of Iran
United Arab Emirates-Iran, Politics, 6/7/1999
The United Arab Emirates has warned the Gulf Cooperation Council member states against strengthening their relations with Iran. UAE Foreign Minister Rashid bin Abdallah al-Nuaymi said today that the Gulf States should be cautious toward strengthening their relations with Iran, as the dispute is still going on between Iran and the UAE over the islands of Abu Mousa, Lesser Tanb and Greater Tanb.
The UAE called for international arbitration in the dispute between the two sides on the islands' ownership, occupied by Iran in 1992.
Meanwhile, Mohamed Ahmed El-Mahmoud, the UAE ambassador in Cairo, told ArabicNews.com that the position of the United Arab Emirates is constant, and, "Our aim that no gulf state could establish broad relations at a time when Iran insists on occupying our territories."
He said the UAE has been committed to a peaceful settlement of the island issue, calling for direct negotiations, international arbitration or the International Court of Justice.
