Escalated armed attacks to topple Saddam inside Iraq
Iraq, Politics, 6/7/1999
The London-based al-Sharq al-Awsat daily revealed, according to Iraqi sources it described as well-informed, that there is a political organization inside Iraq which works to topple the "regime" by means of armed struggle.
In its Sunday issue that paper said this organization is launching military operations against the government's centers and the ruling Baath Party, while another secret military organization works inside the Iraqi army to topple the government.
The paper spoke of escalated armed attacks carried out by the "Iraqi organization" during the last ten days of May, noting that the organization launched an attack on the main headquarters of the Baath Party in al-Kout city on the night of May 25, and the attack resulted in the deaths of several Iraqi party officials in the city and of a group of guards who were in charge of defending the headquarters.
The paper added, according to the well-informed Iraqi sources, that a secret organization named "the secret organization of the Iraqi army" is working to eliminate the Iraqi government within the current year.
This is according to a statement the organization circulated inside military barracks, adding that the Iraqi army has become more ready to topple Iraq's political and military leadership which has led the country "into a real catastrophe."
