Barak and a peace plan with Syria
Syria-Israel, Politics, 6/7/1999
Orient Radio's correspondent in the occupied Arab territories quoted Israeli press sources as saying that Israeli Prime Minister-elect Ehud Barak has a plan ready, built on a many-stage schedule, for making peace with Syria.
The radio report added that according to this schedule Israel would initially recognize Syria's sovereignty on the Golan, resume negotiations, and simultaneously the Israeli army would withdraw from south Lebanon.
The Israeli press sources explained that the Israeli withdrawal from south Lebanon would be made in two stages in line with detailed security arrangements in which the US plays a decisive role.
Barak's plan, however, calls for imposing restrictions on the deployment of the Syrian forces, especially the armored vehicles in the area extended between Damascus and the Golan Heights and to keep Israeli "teams" in three early -warning station inside the Golan in order to ensure that the moves of the Syrian military are in the sight of Israel.
The sources added that Israel will face a real problem in preventing the Syrians from having access to the coasts of Tabaraya lake, a situation which the Israelis would propose to settle through having a very "narrow-belt" on the eastern line that to be kept empty for 50 years.
