Ministerial conference adopts draft terrorism control convention in Algiers
Regional-Algeria, Politics, 6/4/1999

An African draft convention on struggle against terrorism was adopted in Algiers on Thursday by participants in a ministerial conference of the Organization of African Unity (OAU).

The 23-article convention will be submitted to the 35th summit of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) to be held in Algeria next July 12-14.

In its preamble, the text voices African countries' concern over the seriousness of terrorism and the dangers the plague represents for states' stability and security.

The document defines the concept of terrorism and means to combat it. It also stipulates the creation of instruments to contain the consequences of terrorism and sets judiciary mechanisms to extradite terrorists.

The conference also adopted a resolution tabled by Egypt calling for the holding, under the aegis of the U.N, of an international conference on struggle against terrorism.
