Drought in Jordan the worst in decades
Jordan, Economics, 6/4/1999

United Nations said on Thursday that the drought Jordan undergoes is the worst in decades. In a joint statement the UN World Food Program and Food and Agriculture Organization, which take Rome as their headquarters, said that droughts in Jordan resulted in the deteriorating yields in wheat and other crops and pushed weak farmers into financial problems.

The report added that the state of drought in Jordan has endangered foodstuffs storage, which is enough only for one quarter of the Jordanian population of 4.75 million.

The report added that some 180,000 villagers and shepherds in Jordan will be in need of 15,000 tonnes of foodstuffs during the next eight months.

The report said that plant production in Jordan decreased at 235 over the figures of 1998 whereas meat and milk production fell by 40% on average.
