North-south prize awarded to Moroccan premier
Morocco, People, 6/2/1999
The 1999 north-south prize of the European Council's center for world interdependence and solidarity was awarded to Abderrahmane Youssoufi, Morocco's prime minister, and Emma Bonino, former European commissioner in charge of Humanitarian issues.
The decision was made by the prize jury at a meeting last Monday in Strasbourg.
The prize is awarded every year to a male and a female figures, one from the north and one from the south, in recognition of outstanding actions to uphold solidarity as well as the values defended by the European council, namely freedom, democracy, human rights and the rule of law.
The prize awarding ceremony will take place in Lisbon at a later date.
The center for world interdependence and solidarity seeks to foster public awareness to the interdependence of world issues, to improve education and information on north-south questions, and to consolidate ties and exchanges between north and south NGOs.
