Morocco-Ivory Coast, Politics, 6/2/1999

Moroccan Prime Minister Abderrahmane Youssoufi renewed on Monday Morocco's commitment to peace and development in Africa.

"Morocco's interest in Africa and its solidarity with African countries is a constant position in its foreign policy," Youssoufi said at an exchange of toasts with Cote D'Ivoire peer, Daniel Kablan Duncan, here on Monday evening.

Youssoufi also hailed the regional integration process in Western Africa with which Moroccco plans to conclude an association accord.

The Moroccan Prime Minister voiced hope that the Morocco-Cote d'Ivoire joint commission, which opened works on Monday in Abidjan, will give a new impetus to bilateral economic and trade cooperation.

The commission is debating ways to upgrade trade and economic exchanges to the level of the excellent political ties that have always bound Rabat and Abidjan.

Bilateral economic relations, which stagnated in the 1980's, were given a tangible boost in the 1990's. in 1998, Morocco's exports to Cote D'Ivoire increased by 18 % compared to 1997 to stand at more than $ 67 million. Imports from the African country were worth $ 2.89 million.

Morocco is the 13th investor in Cote D'Ivoire where 15 Moroccan firms are currently operating.
