Algeria, Jordan assert Madrid terms of reference
Algeria-Algeria, Politics, 6/2/1999

Algeria and Jordan have asserted the importance of achieving a just and comprehensive peace in the region according to international legitimacy resolutions and the Madrid terms of reference.

A joint statement released at the conclusion of the visit held by Jordan's King Abdullah Bin Hussein to Algeria called for resuming the Middle East peace process on the grounds on which the peace process was built in resuming talks on the Syrian track from the point at which they broke off in order to achieve complete Israeli withdrawal from south Lebanon and the occupied Golan Heights.

The two countries asserted the importance of implementing all signed agreements and international resolutions that provide for restoring Arab rights, including the rights of the Palestinian people to establish their own independent state with Jerusalem as a capital.

The two countries called for a new Arab move in order to crystallize a united Arab position to cope with developments in the region as well as to maintain coordination with the Middle East peace process co-sponsors in order to force Israel to abide by full implementation of made obligations.

The two sides called for lifting the embargo imposed on the Iraqi people and to work for building confidence among the "Arab brothers."

Map reported statement said the Algerian president informed his guest on "steps covered in the construction process of the Arab Maghreb Union." The two Arab heads of state expressed satisfaction that the UMA has been dynamized "as a legitimate claim and a strategic choice of peoples of the region" and as "a vector of Arab common action."

The two officials also reviewed the Euro-Mediterranean partnership and underscored the need to carry on coordination with the rest of the Arab countries which are not part of the grouping, Map said, adding that they welcomed Libya's participation in the latest Euro-Mediterranean ministerial meeting as an "important step in consolidating Arab ranks in the process."

The statement pointed to the tragic situation experienced by the Iraqi people as a result of the eight-year long embargo and called for lifting the sanctions and restoring confidence among Arabs, Map added.

Algerian president Abdelaziz Bouteflika held intesive talks with King Abdullah that tackled bilateral relations and issues that included the peace process and the challenges facing the Arab states.

King Abdullah said his country stands beside Algeria and its president to overcome all challenges and difficulties facing the Algerian people in security and stability, adding that Jordan respects Algeria's endurance in combating all forms of terrorism.

King Abdullah expressed hopes that his current visit to Algeria may enhance the bilateral relations between the two countries and peoples to bring joint benefits to both of them.

King Abdullah left Algeria yesterday, heading to Tunis on his current Arab Arab and European tour, which he started by visiting Egypt.
