New pipeline for Sudanese petroleum
Sudan, Economics, 6/1/1999
Sudanese President Omar El-Bashir opened yesterday a new 1600 kilometer pipeline, through which the Sudanese government hopes to export petroleum.
The pipeline would be linked to a new petroleum field that was discovered by a French company in 1982, after which work was halted under the pretext that the output of the field will be specified only for local consumption.
Sudan is passing through difficult economic conditions due to international sanctions imposed by the United Nations.
El-Bashir urged the Sudanese people to protect the project.
