Demonstrations in Khartoum call for trial of Nimeiri
Sudan, Politics, 5/31/1999

Thousands of supporters of the Sudanese Ummah party demonstrated in Khartoum yesterday, in protest over the return of former Sudanese Prime Minister Jaafar Nimeiri to Sudan.

The demonstrators called for trying Nimeiri for killing thousands of the party's supporters, and they criticized the presidential amnesty given to Nimeiri.

Official sources in the party said the demonstration was organized in the name of the 12,000 martyrs killed by Nimeiri, while he was in power.

The demonstrators said: "The country has no right to receive the butcher with a formal celebration at the expense of the people."

Meanwhile, the Sudanese authorities prevented the demonstrators from delivering a petition to Minister of Justice Ali Muhammad Uthman Yasin to protest against the amnesty provided for Nimeiri, where the petition was sent by post to President El-Bashir.
