Egypt asks businessman to sell their products in 300 million consumer COMESA market
Egypt, Economics, 5/31/1999

Speaking at the close of a conference of the Federation of Egyptian Industries, Foreign Minister Amr Moussa said "Egypt is now undergoing a very important and sensitive stage in rebuilding itself politically, economically and socially," Moussa said, adding that the effort entails a distinguished performance different from that of past eras.

Speaking of the conference agenda, Moussa said Egyptian industrialists discussed pending issues with the government and among themselves. These issues, Moussa explained, are vital for building the Egyptian society in addition to constituting an overture for creating a public opinion among all engaged in industry.

Moussa asked Egyptian industrialists to brace themselves for a plethora of economic challenges, not only inside Egypt, but outside as well, especially that the world around was rapidly developing, with immense challenges brewing in the meantime.

Moussa called on Egyptian industrialists to effectively involve in activities of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA), after Egypt became a member a year ago and this year started actual participation in the group's work.

Moussa said Egypt will chair the group in the period between 2001 and 2003 after the implementation of the free trade zone. "Egyptian businessmen must access these markets which have a combined consumer market of some 300 million people, more than half the continent's population," Moussa said. He praised the Egyptian pavilion at the international trade fair held on the sidelines of last week's COMESA summit in Nairobi, Kenya, and said it proved one of Egypt's best exhibitions in recent years and offered a good idea about Egyptian products.

On Euro-Egyptian partnership, Moussa broke the good news that talks on that score were at their final stage and expected them to wind up in the second half of this year, a statement said.
