Trail of Ocalan begins today
Turkey, Judicial, 5/31/1999

The trial of Kurdish leader Abdullah Ocalan is to begin today in Turkey on charges of treason and running a guerilla war in southeastern Turkey for 15 years, leading to the death of tens of thousands.

The trail comes 100 days after Ocalan was arrested in Nairobi, Kenya to face trial for treason, whose penalty is a life sentence according to article 125 of the Turkish penal code.

Ocalan will reply today to the accusations of the deputy general prosecution who accused Oclan of killing thousands of men, women, children and soldiers who were victimized in the war of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK).

The Turkish government allowed some families of victims to take part in Ocalan's trial, providing to them all services and transporting them to Amrali island where the trail is being held.
