Egypt: Five fold summit will not convene before forming the Israeli government
Egypt, Politics, 5/31/1999
Egyptian Foreign Minister Amr Moussa said today that the five-fold Arab summit -- which will include Lebanon, Palestine, Jordan, Syria and Egypt -- regarding Middle East peace process will not be convened before forming the new Israeli government and knowing its policy.
Moussa said that Egyptian President Hosni Muabark will hold talks with the Syrian President Hafez al-Assad during the coming weeks.
Palestinian President Yasser Arafat called for a five-fold Arab summit to discuss the future peace strategy.
Arab sources said that the meeting between President Hosni Mubarak and President Hafez al-Assad will be specified for persuading al-Assad to attend the five-fold summit, as al-Assad refuses to attend a summit in which Arafat participates due to Arafat's breaking a united front by signing a separate agreement with Israeli in 1993.
Moussa expressed optimisim over the current possibility for progress in the peace process, saying, "Hope is looming at the horizon of the Middle East amid indicators showing interest in returning to negotiations on reaching a comprehensive peace."
"The Palestinian National Authority (PNA) has recently succeeded in mobilizing collective international support, so that the mightiest Jewish organization in the US has struck off its slate any opposition to establishing a Palestinian state," Moussa said.
He said it was promising that Syria and Lebanon have expressed readiness to resume peace talks with Israel and said that Egypt is willing to participate in the resumption of the peace process.
