Morocco, Senegal sign cooperation accords
Morocco-Senegal, Economics, 5/31/1999

Morocco and Senegal concluded on Sunday cooperation accords in the fields of sea fisheries, merchant navy and a cooperation protocol between the two countries foreign departments.

The accords were concluded during the visit Moroccan Prime Minister, Abderrahmane Youssoufi, paid to Senegal over the weekend part of a tour to Guinea, Cote D'Ivoire, Gabon and Burkina Faso.

The sea fisheries accord provides for holding training courses of the two countries professionals and the exchange of trainers and experts. Under the accord, The two countries will carry out joint scientific research programs to ensure a better knowledge and use of halieutic resources.

Morocco and Senegal also pledged to exchange expertise in aquaculture, fisheries surveillance and fisheries techniques and equipment.

Cooperation in matters of sea products processing and marketing is also provided for by the accord.

The merchant navy agreement deals with sea transport between Moroccan and Senegalese ports and calls for lifting all obstacles impeding the development of bilateral navigation and trade.

Under the accord, Moroccan and Senegalese ship-owners will set up joint ventures and create sea transport services.

The cooperation protocol between the Moroccan and Senegalese foreign departments provides for a regular consultation between Moroccan and Senegal senior officials on issues related to bilateral relations and international questions of common concern.

The accord also stipulates cooperation in the training of international relations executives of the two African countries.

During Youssoufi's visit to Senegal, the businessmen delegation accompanying the Prime Minister held a series of talks with Senegalese peers on ways to consolidate economic and trade cooperation.

The two countries' economic operators studied opportunities offered to them in either country and agreed to set up join ventures and hold more consultation to identify sectors where partnership possibilities are stronger.

Morocco's exports to Senegal, made up mainly of garments, phosphoric acid, fresh and canned vegetables and fertilizers, are worth $ 15 million, while imports are valued at nearly $ 1 million.

During his stay in Dakar, Prime Minister Youssoufi was received by Senegalese President Abdou Diouf to whom he handed an oral message from King Hassan II.

Youssoufi left Dakar on Sunday for Guinea, second leg of his African tour, meant to consolidate brotherly ties between Morocco and these countries.

The tour also seeks to deepen relations in commercial and cultural fields which are still short of the expected levels, Youssoufi had said before leaving Morocco.
