Oman, Iran for better relations

Iranian President Muhammad Khatami on Sunday in Tehran received a message from Oman's Sultan Qaboos Bin Saeed during his meeting on Sunday with Omani Minister of State for Foreign AffairsYoussef Bin Alawi in Tehran on Sunday.

During the meeting, the Iranian president expressed his hope to visit Muscat "very soon." He also expressed satisfaction over the developed and good relations between Tehran and Muscat. President Khatami said these relations can be an example to be followed to strengthen ties with countries of the region.

President Khatami described the atmosphere in the region as positive. He asserted that countries of the region are persistent to establish stability and strengthen the spirit of understanding in the region.

For his part Bin Alawi praised the practical steps taken to strengthen bilateral relations. He underlined the role played by President Khatami in forwarding friendly atmospheres in the region.

Meanwhile, Alawi has described his talks with his Iranian counterpart, Kamal Kharazi, as positive.

In a statement he made in Tehran on Sunday at the conclusion of a round of talks he held with Iranian Foreign Minister Kamal Kharazi, Bin Alawi said, "Iran is a pivotal country in the region and plays a key role in establishing security and stability in it."

Bin Alawi stated that Sultan Qaboos of Oman stressed in a message he sent to the Iranian president "Muscat's good intention and determination to foster relations with Iran and strengthen regional cooperation between the two countries."

For his part, the Iranian foreign minister described Omani-Iranian relations as an example to be followed for cooperation among the region's states. He added that relations between Muscat and Tehran were always excellent on the bilateral and regional levels. He also referred to the economic cooperation between the two countries.

Kharazi stressed that Iran and Oman have started good cooperation, adding that Iran is currently building an electricity generation station in Oman. He also spoke about joint projects carried out between the two countries. He, in this respect, said that the joint committee between Iran and Oman is seriously following up these projects.

On security and military cooperation between Iran and Muscat, Kharazi said the "military friendship committee between the two countries was established," saying its first meeting will be held in Tehran.
