Jimmy Carter to mediate between Khartoum and Kampala
Sudan-Uganda-USA, Politics, 5/28/1999
Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter will arrive in Khartoum during June to raise a mediation between Sudan and Uganda and to end a rupture that has lasted five years between the two neighboring countries, which are exchanging accusations of supporting the opposition.
Sudanese President Omar El-Bashir said in press statements today, "I approve of the mediation made by the former U.S. president, especially after the improvement of Sudan's relations with its neighbors and the European countries."
El-Bashir stated that the U.S. lifting of a freeze of the deposits of the owner of al-Shifaa factory, destroyed by U.S. forces in a 1998 raid on Khartoum, represents an admission that the American raid on the factory were in error.
