Arab environment ministers meet in Cairo
Regional-Syria, Environment, 5/27/1999
Syrian Minister of State for Environmental Affairs Abdul Hamid al-Munajid has said that Israel's dumping of thousands of tonnes of toxic wastes in the waters of the Mediterranean is a direct threat to the environment and causes direct and grave damage to these waters.
In statements he made in Cairo on Wednesday on the sidelines of the council of the Arab ministers of the environment's 22nd session, currently being held in Cairo, the Syrian minister stated that many "neutral reports" have confirmed Israel's dumping of poisonous and detrimental wastes of toxins.
He called upon the international community to put pressure on Israel, preventing it from dumping these toxins, and appealed to the Mediterranean states to enhance cooperation with a view to withstanding such Israeli practices.
