Iraq will not object to future formula of monitoring system
Iraq, Politics, 5/26/1999

Iraqi sources said that their country would not reject the future formula for activating a monitoring system on Iraqi weapons rather than inspections.

The sources said that Iraq stipulated conditions on the future monitoring which include canceling all forms of sanctions, halting military operations against Iraq, and stopping interference in Iraq's internal affairs and economic affairs.

The source added that to ratify this with Iraq and acknowledge it as a state of complete sovereignty is the only thing that will open the door to establishing a serious and positive relationship between Iraq and the United Nations Security Council.

Baghdad believes that the Russian-French-Chinese proposal can be considered acceptable, because it frames a beginning towards lifting the sanctions, dictating the suspension of sanctions on Iraq for 100 days so they can be reviewed and that calls for lifting sanctions finally.

Baghdad believes that this proposal can be developed in light of Iraqi points of view, calling on the Security Council to put these viewpoints into consideration, the most important of which is the council's fulfillment of its commitments.

Meanwhile, Iraqi newspapers deeply criticized a British - Dutch project to solve the Iraqi crisis, describing it as not concerned with Iraq's liberty and sovereignty, but only concerning itself with the return of foreign investments in the Iraqi petroleum sector. The newspaper described the project as a cheap bargain.
