Disputes prevail in Khartoum on trying Nimeiri
Sudan, Politics, 5/25/1999

For the second consecutive day after the return of former Sudanese President Jaafar Nimeiri, the political debate continued between the government and the opposition on the possibility of trying Nimeiri, as some opposition filed lawsuits against Nimeiri for acts he committed during his rule from 1969 to 1985.

Newspapers published in El-Khartoum said yesterday that the government advised all attorneys not to accept any lawsuits against Nimeiri, who is returning on the basis of the presidential amnesty granted to him by the current Sudanese president, Omar El-Bashir.

The head of supreme general prosecution, Essam Abd El-Kader, stated that there is no cause for lodging claims against Nimeiri.

'Public opinion' newspaper issued in El-Khartoum reported yesterday that that a claim was non suited before prosecute of North capital, filed by a judge who was removed by Nimeiri from his position in 1975.

Meanwhile, Ghazi Soliman, head of National Alliance for Restoring Democracy, said the presidential amnesty granted to Nimeiri is not provided for in law or Sharia, adding that the government cannot pardon. In punishment under the Islamic Sharia those who posses the right of pardon are the family of the killed.
