Erekat criticizes US vice president's statements
Palestine-USA, Politics, 5/25/1999
Palestinian chief negotiator and Minister of Local Government Saeb Erekat has criticized the statements of US Vice President Al Gore in which he excluded resolution 181 issued by the UN General Assembly in 1947 concerning the establishment of a Palestinian state.
Arab League Secretary General Esmat Abdul Meguid warned against US attempts to exclude the UN decision dictating the establishment of a Palestinian state, asking why such declarations are currently issued. He questioned whether the United States wants the Palestinian state's establishment, confirming that there is no peace in the region without establishing a Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital.
Meanwhile, Israeli security forces have arrested several persons in Ramallah in the West Bank, suspecting them of being affiliated to opposition organizations, after which disputes took place between Palestinian youths who threw stones and the Israeli soldiers who in return used gas and rubber-coated bullets.
