Iraq warns Kurdish leader
Iraq, Politics, 5/25/1999

The London-based al-Sharq al-Awsat daily said that Iraqi President Saddam Hussein has warned Kurdish leaders Mesoud Barzani and Jalal Talibani that their "authority in northern Iraq might be destabilized" if they are dragged into what Baghdad considered US attempts to topple the Iraqi government.

In its Monday issue the paper added that President Hussein presided over a meeting of the Iraqi National Security Council at the end of April in the presence of his two aides. The paper stated that the meeting was dedicated to discussing the US political escalation against the Iraqi government.

The-council decided to extend messages to Barzani and Talibani via Deputy Premier Tareq Aziz who is in charge of the Kurdish file in the Iraqi government.
