Gulf states refuse to endorse agreement on intellectual property
Gulf, Politics, 5/24/1999
Gulf sources stated today that the Gulf Cooperation Council states have informed the United States of their refusal to endorse an accord on intellectual property, believing that signing the agreement will lead other countries to demand similar treatment.
This comes at a time in which the two sides abide by the agreements of the World Trade Organization and the Tersee accord concerning the rights of ownership and patents on an invention, adding that the Gulf refusal was communicated to the USA during a meeting held recently in Saudi Arabia.
Moreover, the GCC states confirmed the importance of intellectual ownership and patents on inventions and hinted at the inauguration of GCC Secretary General Jamil al-Hujeilan to the GCC office for patents on inventions.
The sources also stated that the US presented a paper to the preliminary meeting, viewing it as a potential basis for the coming round of economic negotiations with the GCC states and communicating Washington's desire to encourage accepting it so as to contribute in the Gulf projects of infrastructure and linking the GCC states to the electricity and natural gas networks.
