Sudanese government refuses opposition's criticism over Nimeiri's return to Khartoum
Sudan, Politics, 5/24/1999
The Sudanese government has criticized the attack of some opposition parties over the decision to pardon former Sudanese President Jaafar Nimeiri.
The deputy chairman of Sudanese National Council, Abd El-Aziz Shedo, said that Nimeiri's return to Khartoum will serve the situation in Sudan, due to his relations with a large number of countries, adding that the pardon's includes all charges.
He added that most of those who oppose Nimeiri's return were part of his government.
This comes in response to a series of consultations begun by Sudanese opposition parties to oppose pardoning Nimeiri of charges of killing a number of citizens while in power.
The head of the Islamist Nation's Party, Waly El-Deen El-Hady, said there are current consultations to proceed in these measures and to confront the decision to issue the pardon from the Sudanese government, who welcomed Nimieri's return and received him in Khartoum on Saturday.
Sources from the opposition National Alliance for Restoration of Democracy confirmed that they formed a committee to pursue the charges leveled at Nimeiri.
