Morocco calls for urgent measures to alleviate debts of poorest countries
Morocco, Economics, 5/24/1999

Morocco which devotes 32% of its annual budget to the debt burden called crediting countries to convert the debt of poorest countries into investments as a means to alleviate the debt burden.

The call was made by an advisor of Moroccan minister of social development, solidarity, employment and vocational training before the preparatory committee of the UN general assembly's extraordinary session on social development and on new initiatives for Africa and less advanced countries.

The Moroccan official deplored the social deficits entailed by the enforcement of structural adjustment programs and called for integrating social policies in the enforced macro-economic strategies.

He also deemed it necessary to examine and propose urgent measures to cancel the debts of least-developed countries.
