Acts of protest in Somalia
Somalia, Local, 5/24/1999
The al-Souk (market) area in Makadishu on Saturday and Sunday witnessed vast acts of protests during which gunfire was heard following attempts made by the Somalis to restore the money that had already paid to travel to Australia by sea.
More than 200 persons had paid a local company a sum of US $2,100 per person to transport them to Australia, but the ship scheduled to take them there did not leave Somali territorial waters due to warnings made by the government which, for its part, stressed that it foiled an attempt to transport some 2000 emigrants from Somalia to Australia, illegally, SANA reported.
