Mubarak confers with former French president
Egypt-International, Politics, 5/24/1999

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak met on Sunday with former French President Valery Jiscard D'Estaing on the sidelines of the "InterAction Council" conference which opened in Cairo earlier in the day.

At the conference's opening ceremony the former French president stressed the importance of resorting to justice and legitimacy in international relations and of the major world states not to unilaterally to use their veto at the UN.

He expressed regret over the attempts made to marginalize the role played by the UN and warned against the continuation of unilateral pole in the world.

He added that nuclear weapons constitute a major obstacle that threatens international security and stability. He called for honoring UN resolutions and defending the role played by the UN in the interests of all.

Mubarak attended the conference, which will last for three days at the headquarters of the Egyptian Presidency in Cairo.

Taking part in the conference are several world heads of states and governments including former French President D'Estaing, former Mexican President Miguel de la Madrid Hurtado, former Zambian President Kenneth Kaunda, former Jordanian Premier Abdul Salaam al-Majali, former Cypriot President George Vassiliou and others.
