Egyptian human rights group fears new law as aimed against it
Egypt, Politics, 5/22/1999
The Egyptian Organization for Human Rights held a press conference today, in which it announced its opposition to the new "law of assembly" that was presented to the Egyptian People's Assembly (parliament) by the government last week and which is expected to be ratified on Tuesday.
The organizations say the new project aims at shackling their activities, thus committing them to amend their positions and subjects to its articles, which prohibit dealing with political or unionist matter, calling for the imprisonment of those who break the law for one year and a fine of 10,000 pounds.
The political opposition parties have taken a neutral position toward the dispute between the Egyptian government and this organization.
