After an absence of 14 years Nimeiri is back in Sudan today
Sudan, Politics, 5/22/1999
Within the framework of large official and public events, former Sudanese President Jafar Nimeiri returns to his country today after an absence of 14 years, which he spent in Egypt, after he was overthrown in 1985.
It is expected that Sudanese President Omar El-Bashir will be at the top of those who are to receive Nimeiri, where he will meet with Nimeiri and Hassan Turabi, the head of Sudanese Nation's Council (parliament).
Kamal El-Deen Abdallah, the spokesman of the Alliance of Popular Working
Forces organization chaired by Nimeiri, said that the return of Nimeiri will contribute to enhancing the security and stability in Sudan.
On the other hand, the Sudanese opposition called on the Egyptian authorities to detain Nimeiri to prevent him from returning to Sudan. Moreover, Gazy Saliman, the head of the Sudanese National Alliance for the Restoration of Democracy, called on the Egyptian government to detain Nimeiri and present him to an international court, accusing him of violating human rights during his rule from 1969 to 1985.
The spokesman denounced the pardon issued for Nimeiri by El-Bashir, and announced the intention of the opposition to march in a demonstration in Khartoum to protest Nimeiri's return.
