Tunisian Popular Unity Party decides to enter presidential elections
Tunisia, Politics, 5/19/1999

The Tunisian Popular Unity Party decided during an exceptional session of its central council that was convened in Tunis yesterday to participate in the presidential elections that will take place on October 24 and nominate its secretary general, Mohammed Belhaj Amor, to enter these elections.

Belhaj Amor will compete with President Zein El-Abedin Ben Ali, who heads the ruling Constitutional Democratic Rally Party, which seeks a third presidential rule for a five-year period after elections in 1989 and 1994.

These elections will be the first to be entered by more than one candidate since Tunisia's independence from France in 1956.
